2002–03 S.L. Benfica season

The 2002–03 football season was the 99th season of the existence of Portuguese football club Sport Lisboa e Benfica, and the club's 69th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. During the season, which lasted from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2003, Benfica competed in the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal.
Going into a second year without UEFA competitions, qualifying to Europe was one of the club's top priorities; according to Rui Miguel Tovar:
Even with adversities on the bench (José Antonio Camacho replaced Jesualdo Ferreira, with Fernando Chalana in between), Benfica attained the great objective of the season; the return to European competitions through the big door – the UEFA Champions League, confirmed with a second place, which granted a berth in the third qualifying round. Against a superior Porto, and with the bizarre elimination at home in the Taça de Portugal (1–0 with Gondomar of the third division, which led to the removal of the always contested Jesualdo Ferreira), Benfica soon focus on the battle for the second place against Sporting. With three match days to go, the established goal is secured, already with Camacho as manager...".〔Tovar, Rui. p. 595〕

To improve its competitiveness, the club signed some of the best indoors players, Ricardo Rocha and Petit, but also brought back former players, like Hélder and Nuno Gomes. All would become important players in the starting eleven, helping the club earn 75 points in the league – enough to secure the title in 2001–02. With the best attack, and with most away wins, the team performance – especially under Camacho – was greatly improved.〔Tovar, Rui. p. 595〕
Benfica played the last game at the original Estádio da Luz on 22 March 2003, before moving to Estádio Nacional until the construction of the new Estádio da Luz was completed.
